Listened to this part of module 1 as I was editing a post. I’ve heard this basic message before but you get lazy. Cut down my post by 1/3 and made it “punchier”. Received more feedback on that than several of recent posts.

As an example, one sentence in the post previously read:

I think I know what Solomon meant by that verse. But first, we need to talk about family dynamics.

    Here is the current sentence:

I have a hunch. But first, family dynamics.

    Thanks for the reminder!

Nice switch, Amy. It’s interesting how much stronger your thought by sheer process of word elimination.

Thanks for the practical example of this point.

Love the difference in the sentences. Short sentences that capture the essence and get you moving faster makes for such dynamic reading.

Thanks Kim and Laura! The experts say to write short posts but I always want to write long posts to get my point across. I’m really seeing how I can satisfy both by editing.

It’s so hard to try to cut words! One thing that was so freeing that I heard a few years back is that as writers, we don’t need to follow all the rules. I am a rule follower by nature. By being given the permission to break basic writing rules occasionally, I was finally freed to experiment with my voice!

I love the change you made in those sentences, Amy. That is a fantastic practical reminder.

I find it very hard to cut words. When I edit posts sometimes they even become longer!! The edit in your post is brilliant Amy - makes it so much punchier. Editing is probably one of the weaker areas of my writing, an area I need to practice. Cutting a 3rd of a post is a huge challenge to me - but I am up to it, I will keep trying and keep practicing - with all of you to spur me on!
