Kat, what I see in your post is that you’re great at creative solutions to difficult problems. Perhaps you could blog about ways to do that, using examples from your life.

Well, I specifically chose my wording because, just like the Black Lives Matter movement, I believe it’s important to highlight women’s issues. Women are put down far more than men, raped and battered far more often, and receive far more push-back against their careers. Notice that I didn’t say anything about wanting men to have terrible lives. Of course I don’t want that. I simply want to put the focus on women. I am, while doing so, thinking about what I focus upon in my fiction writing: women, their issues, and their struggles. If you listen to Jeff’s video for this lesson, he talks about how important it is to be specific. Adding men waters my statements down - they become too generic.

Having been bullied, and having been a female scientist in a world of male scientists, I know firsthand the importance of continuing to use the words ‘women and girls’ in my statements.

This is an interesting question; I am not sure I’ve pinned it down yet. But I asked three people to give me 3-5 words. Also, I opened books by my favorite authors and thought about why I liked their writing and would like to emulate them (not copy, but encompass some of what they manage to capture). I also thought about the themes which run through my own writing.

The words I got from my three people were all different and one person said my writing voice varied a lot. I’m not sure that’s such a bad thing. Perhaps describing our voice is a bit like trying to catch a bird in flight. Sure, there are some thing about it which will remain the same, yet many things will change, especially as we evolve as writers.

I love this exercise, as it helps us define ourselves and what we have to say which is unique! I tired posting my response before, so I apologize in advance if it appears here again… It just doesn’t seem to have posted.

Francine, I love your third statement so much that I’m stealing it, as it was very similar to my first one, you just said it better than I could.

    1. Every woman and every girl should have the same opportunities and privileges as men and boys, and should not be limited or threatened because of their gender.

    2. Every woman (and man) should have the opportunity to pursue a fulfilling life, whether that’s something creative, a career, a family, their curiosity, or their spirituality (and these are not mutually exclusive or all inclusive).

    3. Every person should explore who they really are, deep inside, independent of what the world tells them.

Well, of course it’s difficult to stop there. So…

    4. Every person should be concerned about the environment and climate change.

    5. Every person should understand the scientific method and some elementary math, physics and biology.

    6. Every girl and woman should have the right to decide who can touch her body.

Enough, I suppose. The list could go on and on, although I don’t have twenty-seven statements yet…

Never mind, I figured it out when I saw my name appear next to this question and clicked on it.

    Hi Kathi,

I’m in Oregon, too, in Central Oregon. I write mainstream fiction and fantasy/speculative fiction, and have published a few short stories and flash fiction (I have two stories in a free ebook called

Mosaic: a compilation of creative writing

which you can obtain from any of the major places (Amazon, ibooks, etc) )

I’ve been on the road for the past week and unable to get any lessons done, but I’m excited to be home and to get going on this course.

    Ann

I clicked over to your home page, and I found it very inviting, and much like the others were suggesting you should do on your about page. I would agree that your about page needs paring, and it probably should contain a summarized biography which includes why you’re an expert and can help, with links to more in depth stories about losing your mom, dad and husband. Or those stories could be blog posts, perhaps interspersed with advice blogs.

Hi Drew, It sounds like you’ve learned a lot about blogging! I tried, but faded out after awhile. Finding the right topic isn’t easy, is it? As I get closer to publishing, I know I need to return to it and do it better. I’m hoping this class will be what I need, and also hoping to meet some great people here.
